MoxSpec - SEL decoder is ready.

Introduction of “MoxSpec-OcpSEL”

We are happy to make this announcement “MoxSpec-OcpSEL” is now available to everyone in the community, which will assist broader range of people who are looking at adopting technologies like Open Compute Project and white box products.

“MoxSpec-OcpSEL” is a utility tool to translate System Event Log (SEL) to human readable information for your ops team and onsite team to easily troubleshoot and identify what to be replaced. This will help teams to run and operate Open Compute / white box servers with the “part-level” replacement to gain another level of operational scalability with the efficiency.

Foundation for “Operation at Scale”

This is from a joint interview from Open Compute Foundation and describing a part of benefit of Open Compute products (essentially any flavor of white box products).

"The third reason is the flexibility of the choice of the parts. We’ve been standardizing key components such as direct SSD, NIC, and other components within a server. They allow us to pick, choose and determine the best possible candidates yielding a higher ROI. This is very effective because if we didn't have a choice of the parts and had to compromise we might have piles of spares from different vendors which decreases our operational efficiency. In summary the benefits are ease of maintenance and access as well as the flexibility of choosing the right components.”

When you adopt Open Compute, instead of getting the benefit out of "part level" replacement for a better standardization and operational efficiency, the onsite service team might face to a set of challenges in the troubleshooting to identify what component needs to be replaced. MoxSpec-OCPSEL is developed and allows engineering team and onsite service teams easily identify what to be replaced such as a DIMM slot.

Democratizing the chance to gain another level of operational scalability to us by adopting open technologies like OCP should be for everyone, and here we think MoxSpec would be the foundation for the future.
